FREITAG Reference are back: a new chapter in upcycling

First introduced in 2009 and now completely reinvented, FREITAG Reference applies more than thirty years of expertise in working with used truck tarpaulins to a collection defined by a cleaner, more precise aesthetic. Unicolored truck tarps are hand-selected across Europe according to strict criteria and transformed in small series through a complex production process. Scratches, folds, tonal variations and traces of their former life on the road remain visible: this individual patina is what makes every FREITAG Reference bag one of a kind.

The collection is defined by trapezoid silhouettes, side seams that shape the volumes and a magnetic logo plate inspired by the adjustable shelving systems used at FREITAG’s Zurich factory. Our selection includes the compact R201 ELLY crossbody bag, the transformable R203 MAZIE XL tote and the R204 NAN baguette bag.

White, silver, red and blue form the permanent FREITAG Reference color palette, joined by special seasonal colors. The first drop starts with black. Behind the cleaner shapes, functionality remains central: each model features its own internal organization, multiple carrying options and a protective recycled polyester dust bag.

Each bag also comes with a repair kit made from the very same truck tarp as the original piece, including matching material for future repairs. It reflects the central idea behind Reference: giving existing materials a new context, preserving their history and designing bags intended to last, be used and eventually repaired.
